I thought you should see the finished

painting after showing you the earlier

stage of it. I have had a wonderful time

painting it because it took me back to

this lovely and romantic place, almost

like something out of a movie. It is

part of the grounds of a beautiful

Inn in southern Maryland.

Information on my working style

For some time now you have seen my more traditional oil painting style. It is realistic and based on the physical universe around me. I either work from life, or from photos that I take myself for the purpose of painting from them.

I haven't posted my abstract work until now because I wasn't interested in confusing anyone with the wide range of things I can do. It has been a more traditional view that an artist "should" develop something steady and recognizable as theirs and then pretty much stick to that. Well I just don't do that!

When I paint abstract work, it is much more demanding of me than traditional realism. EVERYTHING in the piece comes from ME! And so there is no relying on how it is in the "real" world, only relying and drawing on MY world. To do it, I have to be in really good communication with the harmonics that I have decided will govern the piece. Sometimes I have to let considerable time pass while I look at and let develop what I want and need to do next.

Magical Spaces II

This is the other one of the pair that is at the

restaurant. When a work with metallic paint is

photographed, you do not get the shine. To the

right of this painting is an area that appears to be

grey, but in fact it is silver! And at the top right

is an slash of gold! So you will just have to imagine

how it really is, or ask me for the name of the

restaurant and go see it yourself!

Magical Spaces I

This is one of the pair that is hanging in the restaurant

I told you about yesterday! It has gold and silver

as the 'undercoat' and that adds a certain extra

something when you see it in different lights.

I would love to know your response as this is

not the usual thing that I post. I do abstracts

from time to time and have developed a way of

getting the effects I want in a variety of ways I

have invented.

Photograph of my work at local restaurant

I have had my work on display at an Italian

restaurant in my town for over eight years. It

is privately-owned and so the care and interest in

my work has been good in comparison to a franchise

sort of operation. The two center paintings are mine.

I show my work with an artist friend and her two

pieces are on either end. Tomorrow I will post

close-ups of my paintings shown here.

Work in Progress

Oil 24" x 36"

Well I was feeling guilty for not

posting for so long. I did explain, but

now I decided to put this up for you

to see one of the things I have been

doing. This is of the most idyllic pond

and trees I have ever seen. It is a

place in Maryland across the Bay Bridge

that takes you from Annapolis to the

other side of the Chesapeake Bay.

The house on this property is now a

B & B and is a great old huge brick place

from the 1800s. It was in October and

the trees and grasses were in their last

beauty before loosing their leaves and

blossoms. I will post the completed

painting. Lots more to do with the

water and reflections.

Art Update!

I have been working on several large pieces as well as a commission that is 3' x 5'. So I have put aside my small works for a while in order to devote my studio time to completing these works. I am happy to have done 8 pieces since the end of May. This is a production record for me! The 9th painting is mostly done and is sitting on my easel ready for the finishing touches.

There is an old home in my town that was saved

from razing some years ago. This is a bit of that

place and I am happy it is still here to be graced

with a porch full of summer geraniums and a place

to sit on a hot afternoon.

my paintings because I have so much

enjoyment in the process of doing them!

Quintessential image of the Fourth!

OK. So I HAD to do yet one more for you of

my fourth of July in Annapolis. Didn't the flag

cooperate big-time? Just the right position and

all. It was a day when boaters of all descriptions

with their families/dogs were out on the water.

Everything from a hand-made wooden sailboat

to kayakers well into their 60s and 70s. How

neat a spectacle it was and I had a front row seat

thanks to my Sis and her husband.

Here is a photo of the house I painted from my last

post. What a gorgeous place. Lots of people showed

up there later in the day of the 4th for a party on

the lawn. They came in big boats and tied up at their

dock and then you could barely see the house anymore!

Across the water-Fourth of July

Did this in my watercolor sketchbook on the

4th of July. I was in Annapolis with family members

who have a lovely boat! Lucky me. Across from

where we were tied up on Spa Creek was this

gorgeous home. Tables and chairs were set up on

their lawn and soon after large boats arrived and

tied up at their dock. Guests poured out and stayed

into the evening to watch the fireworks. We did

the same thing, but from the dinghy where we

had a front row seat! Wonderful!

Flowers in a Vase

Here it is all done! I have to fight the

tendency to overdo details when I love

the subject matter so much. This

irridescent bowl belonged to my parents

and I have loved it for many years.

The flowers were sent to my parents by

a friend who had the most abundant flower

garden. The flowers filled every vase they

owned - and they owned a lot!

Mood Lighting - work in progress

I thought I'd show you what I've been

doing. I'm working on larger pieces now

and this is one of them. Saw this lovely

backlight on my friend who was taking a

break in a coffee shop lounge after we

attended an Art Expo. I'd say this is

about half done, but the 'bones' are in

place, so I am daring to show it to you

at this very unfinished stage.

Photograph-My students

This is a shot of my students after the lecture

was over. I invited them to bring a favorite piece

of their work to share since they do not have class

with each other. Now they have a more in-depth

understanding of color as we learned a lot from

looking at the Albers studies.

about the color exercises of Joseph

Albers. Here I am with white gloves

to prevent my fingerprints marking

the wonderful studies he did.

for just long enough for the adults

to take your picture and then you

run off into the water and frolic!

The Japanese Gate

Such aesthetics! One of the entrances

to the Japanese Tea Garden in San

Francisco. What a setting and variety

of beautiful trees! And there was no

fog that day!

My Romance

Artist's license was used to put these

two in a 'proper' setting. They were

actually dancing on a stage set in a

barn where a wonderful performance

was held. I loved the feeling of these

two and so I created the place I want

them to be, in their own romantic and

private world.

The Blue Door

There is nothing about this that

does not fascinate me. This door

is somewhere in California. In

itself, it is beautiful and seems

rather European. Having an

entrance on a hill certainly was

'fixed' by the step which leveled things

out in order to go inside! But then

there is the interesting sidewalk

pattern. And no, my perspective

is not off!

Sketch Artist

I was walking through a park and came upon this

young woman sketching. Being an artist gives me

LOTS of affinity for others who do the same thing.

Except for sitting on the hard ground.

Burst of Summer

I took a small vase with a little water and went

to the farm fields where I can cut as many of these

brilliant flowers as I can pay for! Nothing like

zinnias for the full blast pigment colors you can

use to paint them!

Summer Idyll by the Potomac

Mid-summer along the canal that

skirts the Potomac River is a place of

peace and quiet. It is one of those

amazing places set aside right where

a big city is that is a sanctuary for its

residents. I have spent many days

and years walking this path.

My small paintings are all in various

stages, but here is the first completed

one since I have been absent from

this site!

I have many small pieces ready to paint now.
I not only have the commission going, but was
away from the studio and so took along the small
gesso boards and have over a dozen ready to work
on now that I can get my hands on my paints!

I give you this to enjoy while I am working on the
commission that will take me away from my
daily work for a while. This lady kitty of mine
is laying on the desk in my studio under the lamp
"sunning" herself in its warmth. She is also laying
on my jacket with one of her toys dangling from
the lamp in the background. She's got it made.
She's always in the studio when I am working or
teaching. I know she is gathering up art tips for
her fabulous future as an artist with very long
whiskers. I love her.

Porch By The Woods

I can easily imagine myself on the porch, and yet
to look up as I walk the lake path is quite pleasing
in itself. Queen Anne's Lace adds her lovely
embroidery to this early summer scene.

Mother's Gifts

I've had this little Paddington fellow on my elegant

writing desk for years now. He peeks out of a

cubby hole (how appropriate a name for his place)

and charms me with his sweetness. When I was

well into my adult life, my Mother gave him to

me. As I looked for things of consequence to me

that I would want to paint, there he was. Of course

I had to give him some things to play with....

Here you have the painting AND the set up
of how I work on my small pieces. You can see
that I have put my painting on a larger piece of
matboard. I learned that from Joyce Washor and
her wonderful book, Big Art, Small Canvas.
However, I must admit that I still put my fingers
in the wet paint!

the formal name of this beauty and
said that they used to be extremely
plentiful on Florida beaches.
